FRANK SMITH

Frank Smith joins the Lions after an outstanding coaching career at the collegiate level with the UBC Thunderbirds. Smith's head coaching career at UBC spanned 21 seasons (1974-94). Smith's Thunderbirds captured two Vanier Cups, 1982 and 1986 along with two other trips to the national championship game. The T-Birds won their conference five times (1976, 78, 82, 86 and '87) on their way to 126 victories and a school record for Smith. Smith also won the Frank Tindell Trophy as the CIAU Coach of the Year twice, 1978 and 1987. His CFL career has included 11 training camps as a Guest Coach, split between the BC Lions (76, 83-85, 87, 91), Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders. He was involved as a coach in the 1988 CFL All-Star Game. In 1995, Smith was the Roughriders Offensive Backs and Receivers Coach. Smith, a Vancouver native, started 3 games for the BC Lions in the 1956 season as a guard. He also spent four other seasons in the CFL with the Calgary Stampeders, the Edmonton Eskimos and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Frank Smith began his coaching career at Vancouver's Notre Dame High School in 1956. From there he moved on to coach the Big Four Spartans. In 1959, Frank headed south to become an assistant with Eastern Washington University. After two seasons at EWU Smith took over as Head Coach at Tonasket High School in 1961. Centralia High School was the next stop and after four seasons, Smith became the Head Coach at Wenatchee Junior College in 1966. In 1968, he moved on to Montana State as an assistant coach. In 1971, Smith returned to Vancouver as Head Coach of Sentinel High School and stayed there until 1973. Frank and his wife Diane have been together for 41 years. They have three children Cheri, Casey and Lori as well as one granddaughter Lilia. Frank enjoys cross training, travelling, reading and politics. His son, Casey, has followed in his father's footsteps and is Head Coach of Vancouver's UBC Thunderbirds.
